A night out in London with Beowulf

One of the many entertainment benefits of this internet age is the ability to search back IMG_3570and view publications, programmes or events from the past. I googled Beowulf-Julian Glover in an idle moment and found a snippet of the ‘one man show’ which the actor presented during the early part of the 1980’s.

Following a sell out season at the Edinburgh Festival and the Bristol Old Vic, I managed to catch a performance at the Lyric Theatre in London’s Hammersmith. On the right is a copy of my ‘flyer’ from the evening.

This was during the days when Anglo Saxon history was very much a minority interest.   Only a few years previously most people had been introduced to names like Aethelstan and Eric Bloodaxe by the then young t.v presenter Michael Wood’s ‘In Search of the Dark Ages’ series of programmes on the B.B.C. If there is a programme which you would like to see again, try you-tube. It’s good fun and you may be surprised as I was. Below is a short recording from that 1980’s performance describing the fight with Grendel.
